Why should I get my eyes dilated? Dilation is necessary to allow the doctor to examine the internal structures of the eye. Without a dilation many diseases and problems with the eye can not be identified.
How often should I get my eyes dilated? In a normal healthy individual a dilation is necessary at least every other year, but many doctors recommend a yearly dilation.
Can I wear contact lenses even though I don’t need a prescription to see clearly? Yes, just because a person doesn’t have a refractive error that doesn’t preclude them from contacts. Cosmetic contact lenses are becoming more and more popular. However it is important that these contact lenses be fit and evaluated by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
Why should I have an exam and be fit with contact lenses? Why can't I just get them? Contact lenses are considered medical devices and it is illegal to dispense them without a valid perscription. There are many complications which can occur as a result of improper contact lenses or improper usage.
How often should I get my eyes examined? You should examine your eyes yearly even if you don’t need a prescription to see clearly. Many eye diseases and systemic diseases can effect the eye and in the early stages not necessarily effect vision. If diagnosed early the prognosis is better.
Am I a good candidate for LASIK? Only after a thorough examination by a trained optometrist or ophthalmologist can it be determined whether or not you are a good candidate for LASIK.
At what age should my child have her/his first eye exam? There is no set age, but the earliest they have an exam the quicker any visual problems can be discovered and treated. Many early visual problems can lead to amblyopia and strabismus, which can affect best corrected vision and binocularity. |
